LIDO HOUSE BOUTIQUE HOTEL PROJECT APPROVED BY THE COASTAL COMMISSION

Lido House Boutique Hotel Project Finally

Approved by the Coastal Commission

After over four  years of planning the plans for the Lido House Boutique Hotel Project finally passed  the Coastal Commission  on October 7th by a 10-2 vote. Almost one year to the date when  the City of Newport Beach officially signed the lease over to R.D. Olson for the property on Newport Boulevard.

The old city hall site will be transformed into a 4 story, 130 room luxury boutique hotel with 4,453 square feet of function space, 3195 square  feet of restaurant, 856 square  feet for retail floor area and 148 on-site parking spaces. The Newport nautical design will capture the heritage and spirit of Lido and Newport Beach and will be an essential anchor to revitalize the reclining Lido Village.. The design includes truly public open spaces, including a new “Bay to Beach Park” for residents and guests.

Since the hotel does not offer any low cost overnight accommodations, R.D. Olson is allowed to pay an in lieu fee of approximately 1.4 million to fund a 10 year low/no cost educational program for kids called “Fostering interest in nature”.  The program will be established by the City of Newport Beach and would aim to bring in 420 disadvantaged fifth and sixth grade students from Title 1 schools. The kids would stay for a three night educational camp at the Newport Dune and Marina and will learn about nature and be provided with the opportunity to kayak, swim and surf.

R.D. Olson Development and R.D. Olson Construction have been the most active hotel developers on the West Coast since 2010. The owner of R.D Olson is Bob Olson, a longtime resident of Newport Beach. The hotel operator is Destination Hotels & Resorts, which operates three hotels in SoCal and has an excellent track record in running upscale coastal hotels.
